Aids, the pandemic that has been sweeping the world and especially Sub-Saharan Africa and taking million of lives, may finally have been exposed to a weak spot. The weakness seems to be hidden in HIV envelop protein gp120. This is the protein that allows the virus to attach to host cells. Kill this protein, and you may have killed the thing that lets the virus spread and through that, may have stopped the virus. The section of the virus is under heavy study as it may result in finding a cure for the one of the worst viruses of all time. Of course, there is always the danger of the virus mutating, but at the least, it will be a temporary cure. Since there are no cures right now, thats far better than anything we have. This is certainly something to keep an eye on. |
