He did it! Phelps won his 8th gold medal and in world record breaking time. This takes him past Mark Spitz as winner of the most golds in one game. This last race was the 4*100 relay. Phelps swam the 3rd leg, the butterfly stroke, and gave the United States a sizable lead with his performance. The main competition was Australia with Japan in contention for quite a while. Here’s a breakdown of how the race panned out: |
In the backstroke, the United States got a bit of a lead but that was quickly dissolved in the second leg, the breast-stroke, in which Japan came out on top with a bit of a lead with the Aussies and the US coming close behind. The 3rd legs was Michael Phelps who swam his heart out to give the United States more than half a body-length lead so that the fourth leg, Jason Lezak could easily finish off the last leg and give the United States the Gold. This puts Michael Phelps alone in number of gold medals won in one game. What an incredible performance, what a man. Hats off to him.
In other swimming news, 41-yr old Darra won the silver in the 50 meter freestyle and silver in the 4*100 women’s relay. An incredible feat at such an age. This woman won her first medal the year before Phelps was even born.
