After the two conventions, polls show that the two candidates are in a dead heat against each other. CNN’s Poll of 1022 registered voters showed that McCain and Obama were tied at 48 percent each with 3 percent undecided. What’s more is that when you average three polls that were all taken after conventions, McCain is actually up by one point. While you can say that the CNN poll is biased, it is much harder to argue that the collective polls are biased. McCain has completely closed the gap between himself and Obama.
I attribute this to several things. The first is that Obama did not pick Hillary Clinton for his VP choice. Since a lot of the die-hard Hillary Clinton supporters were voting on gender lines(hey, I’ll say, I don’t care if its politically incorrect) and wanted Hillary Clinton no matter what, they are just royally pissed at Obama not giving Clinton the Nod. Regardless of what Bill and Hillary say, they are going to jump ship and vote McCain. Obama’s choice of VP may have netted a VP that won’t get in his way, but it did cost him several votes.
The second reason is McCain’s choice of VP, which unfortunately for Obama, happens to be a women. Since the die-hard Clinton supporters are voting along gender lines, this makes it even easier for them to jump ship now since there is a female on the other ticket. And whats more, Obama’s been attracting votes because he’s young, dynamic, energized, and all the rest of that good stuff that McCain isn’t. Unfortunately for him, Sarah is also young, energized, dynamic, and hey, she’s even hotter than he is. Although it may have not seemed like it at first, John McCain scored a home run in choosing a running mate.
This is one election that may come down to the debates between the presidential nominees. I’m not sure who is going to win out there as Obama has drawn a blank on policy and McCain has some not-so-popular views but it makes watching the debates far more exciting.
